Abstract

At-Home-Assessment (AHA) in reading is an approach to evaluate the performance of the learners in reading and to have follow-up activities with the guidance of parents. This study aims to determine the efficiency of the AHA approach to the reading performance of 32 Grade 4 independent readers at Tanauan North Central School during the school year 2022–2023. This paper sought to find the status of the readers in word recognition, fluency, and reading comprehension skills through various assessments, as well as the significant differences in the results of pre-test and post-test on the mentioned skills. Likewise, this paper identified the challenges encountered by parents in administering the reading exercises at home to their children. This study employed quantitative research using the quasi-experimental design, using pre-test and post-tests adopted in the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) assessment. The questionnaire created by this study was used to identify the challenges of the parents in the implementation. Data were collected and analyzed accordingly using statistical methods such as mean, standard deviation, percentage, and t-test of independence. The results show that students are at an advanced level of word recognition,an independent level in both fluency and reading comprehension skills after the post-test assessment. Moreover, the study revealed that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test of the said skills.Furthermore, there are minimal errors observed in the reading materials as mentioned challenges of the parents. This implies that the continuation of the approach that focuses on reading assessment at home is effective, thus teachers and parents must collaborate to maintain the independent reading level of the learners.
