Abstract

One of the reading skills that every learner must master is reading comprehension. Although teachers have given their students reading instructions and comprehension tools to help them to improve, some students’ reading comprehension still needs to catch up to the competency level. Project RECAP aims to improve the reading and basic comprehension skills of 27 Grade 5 frustration readers at Bugtongnapulo Elementary School during the school year 2022–2023. This study sought to determine the status of the readers in reading comprehension skills through a series of assessments and the significant differences in the results of pre-test and post-test on the mentioned skill. Moreover, this paper identified the project’s implication in increasing the learners’ reading comprehension skills. This study utilized quantitative research using the quasi-experimental design, using pre-test and post-test adopted in the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) assessment. Data were collected and analyzed accordingly using statistical treatments such as mean, standard deviation, percentage, and t-test of independence. The results showed that 12 learners were identified as instructional readers while 15 were still in frustration level in the post-test results. A person’s underlying knowledge, aptitude, family circumstances, educational experiences, and degree of interest can all impact their reading skills. On the other hand, the results showed that although some of them still fall on the frustration level, there is a positive impact on their reading comprehension level since there is a difference in the learner’s comprehension score. Plus, the study revealed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results. Moreover, reading opens the door to numerous chances for growth and development, thus an intervention program is necessary for learners identified as frustration readers. Several aspects impact the capacity and willingness of the students to read. This implies that the continuation projects that focus on reading assessment are practical. Thus teachers, parents, and the community must have a collaborative effort to help learners to develop their reading comprehension skills.
